GIFT / ZIFT |
 |
Gamete intrafallopian transfer
(GIFT): Eggs and sperm are collected from the
female and male partners and combined together in a dish in a
lab then the mixture is inserted into the fallopian tubes.
Fertilization happens inside the body and the embryo implants
naturally. Although this procedure was once commonly practiced,
it's rarely used today because the success with IVF is usually
greater.
Zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT): As with
GIFT, the eggs and sperm are mixed in a dish in a lab, however,
fertilization is allowed to take place creating a zygote which
is then replaced inside the fallopian tubes. This procedure is
no longer commonly performed because it has a lower success rate
than IVF.
One of the drawbacks of GIFT/ZIFT is that
they involve two separate procedures:
Egg retrieval one day followed by another procedure
(laparoscopy) later to transfer the gametes or zygotes into the
tube which means having to undergo anesthesia twice.
